Accepted Answer

Foundation Shield is backed by over 20 years of hands-on construction experience. This experience supports the company's practical approach to assessing home concerns and discussing appropriate solutions.

Question 3

What types of home problems can you help with?

Accepted Answer

The company can discuss concerns such as damp crawl spaces, recurring basement water, excessive moisture, musty odours, foundation problems, and uneven or sagging floors.

Question 4

Does every home need the same solution?

Accepted Answer

No. The appropriate approach depends on the property's construction, the source of the problem, the affected areas, and the findings of an assessment. Foundation Shield believes in tailored solutions rather than assuming every property has the same needs.

Question 5

How do I contact Foundation Shield?

Accepted Answer

Call (416) 500-6337 or visit the Contact page to describe your concerns and request information about the next steps.

Question 6

What is crawl space encapsulation?

Accepted Answer

Crawl space encapsulation generally involves installing a protective vapour barrier over exposed ground and addressing relevant moisture entry points. Depending on the property, additional measures such as drainage improvements or dehumidification may be appropriate.

Question 7

What are common signs of a moisture problem in a crawl space?

Accepted Answer

Possible signs include persistent musty odours, visible dampness, standing water, condensation, or deterioration of wooden materials. These signs can have different causes, so further assessment may be needed.

Question 8

Why is crawl space moisture control important?

Accepted Answer

Excessive moisture can contribute to deterioration of building materials and create conditions that encourage mould growth. Managing moisture can help protect vulnerable materials and improve conditions beneath the home.

Question 9

Does crawl space encapsulation include a dehumidifier?

Accepted Answer

Not necessarily. The appropriate system depends on the crawl space conditions, moisture sources, ventilation, and the property's requirements. A dehumidifier may be considered when appropriate.

Question 10

Can crawl space improvements help with cold floors?

Accepted Answer

They may help in some circumstances. Cold floors can have several causes, including insulation deficiencies, air leakage, and moisture conditions. The appropriate approach depends on the home's construction and the underlying issue.

Question 11

What are common signs that my basement may have a water problem?

Accepted Answer

Signs can include water on the floor, damp patches, water staining, musty smells, peeling finishes, or recurring moisture after rainfall. These symptoms can have different causes and may require investigation.

Question 12

What does basement waterproofing involve?

Accepted Answer

Basement waterproofing may involve managing water around the foundation, improving drainage, collecting unwanted water, or directing it to an appropriate discharge point. The specific method depends on the property's conditions.

Question 13

What is an interior drainage system?

Accepted Answer

An interior drainage system is designed to collect water entering or accumulating along vulnerable basement areas and direct it toward a suitable collection or discharge point, often associated with a sump system. Its suitability depends on the property.

Question 14

What does a sump pump do?

Accepted Answer

A sump pump removes collected water from a sump basin and discharges it to an appropriate location. The system must be selected and installed to suit the property's conditions and applicable requirements.

Question 15

Can waterproofing prevent every future water problem?

Accepted Answer

No system should be presented as a guarantee against every possible water event. Performance depends on the property's conditions, drainage, maintenance, installation, and circumstances such as extreme weather.

Question 16

What are possible signs of foundation problems?

Accepted Answer

Possible warning signs include new or widening cracks, uneven floors, sticking doors or windows, or visible movement. These symptoms do not automatically mean a major foundation failure has occurred. An appropriate assessment is needed to understand the cause.

Question 17

Can foundation cracks be repaired?

Accepted Answer

Some cracks can be repaired, but the correct method depends on the crack's cause, location, size, movement, and whether water is entering. A suitable assessment helps determine the next steps.

Question 18

What causes foundation problems?

Accepted Answer

Potential contributing factors include soil movement, changes in moisture conditions, drainage issues, settlement, and other structural or construction-related conditions. The actual cause varies by property.

Question 19

Should I ignore a foundation crack that is not leaking?

Accepted Answer

It is better to pay attention to changes in cracks, especially if they are growing, accompanied by movement, or associated with other warning signs. A professional assessment can help determine whether further action is appropriate.

Question 20

Can Foundation Shield tell me what is wrong with my foundation from a photo?

Accepted Answer

A photograph may help explain what you have noticed, but it cannot always establish the underlying cause. Additional information and an on-site assessment may be necessary.

Question 21

What causes excess moisture beneath a home?

Accepted Answer

Possible sources include ground moisture, water intrusion, drainage problems, plumbing leaks, condensation, and humid outdoor air. Identifying the source is important before deciding on an appropriate solution.

Question 22

Can a musty smell indicate a moisture problem?

Accepted Answer

Yes, a persistent musty smell can be a sign of damp materials or other moisture-related conditions. However, smell alone does not confirm the source or establish whether mould is present.

Question 23

What is a vapour barrier?

Accepted Answer

A vapour barrier is a material designed to restrict water vapour movement through a building assembly. Its placement and specifications depend on the construction and the moisture-management strategy.

Question 24

Will a dehumidifier solve every crawl space moisture problem?

Accepted Answer

No. A dehumidifier can help control humidity in suitable conditions, but it may not address water intrusion, drainage failures, plumbing leaks, or other sources of moisture. The underlying cause should be considered.

Question 25

Why should the source of moisture be identified first?

Accepted Answer

Treating only the visible symptoms may leave the underlying issue unresolved. Understanding the source helps determine which combination of drainage, moisture barriers, repairs, insulation, or humidity-control measures may be appropriate.

Question 26

What can cause uneven or sagging floors?

Accepted Answer

Potential causes include weakened or undersized supports, changes in structural materials, settlement, moisture-related deterioration, or other construction conditions. An assessment is needed to determine the cause.

Question 27

Can bouncy floors be stabilized?

Accepted Answer

Depending on the cause, possible solutions may include reinforcing beams, improving support, or installing suitable support posts. The appropriate solution depends on the home's structural conditions.

Question 28

What are adjustable support posts?

Accepted Answer

Adjustable support posts are structural components used in suitable applications to support beams or other load-bearing elements. Their selection and installation must account for the building's loads and structural requirements.

Question 29

Can crawl space insulation improve home comfort?

Accepted Answer

Appropriate insulation may help improve comfort and reduce unwanted heat transfer. Results depend on the home's design, air leakage, moisture conditions, and existing insulation.

Question 30

Should insulation be installed before a moisture problem is addressed?

Accepted Answer

Moisture conditions should be assessed before selecting and installing insulation. Installing materials without addressing relevant moisture sources can lead to ongoing performance or durability problems.

Question 31

How do I request a quote?

Accepted Answer

Call (416) 500-6337 or visit the Contact page. Describe the problem you have noticed, the affected part of the home, and any relevant details so the next steps can be discussed.

Question 32

What happens after I contact Foundation Shield?

Accepted Answer

The first step is to understand your concerns. The team can discuss the relevant details and determine what further information or assessment may be needed.

Question 33

Will I need an inspection?

Accepted Answer

That depends on the issue. Some concerns cannot be properly understood from a brief description alone. An inspection or additional assessment may be needed to determine the cause and suitable options.

Question 34

Which areas does Foundation Shield serve?

Accepted Answer

Foundation Shield serves Barrie, Orillia, Georgina and Keswick, Innisfil, Bradford West Gwillimbury, Kawartha Lakes, Oshawa and Durham Region, Cobourg and Port Hope, and Belleville. Contact the team to confirm availability for your particular location and needs.
